Step 1 · Understand numbers
A gentle introduction to the abacus and its beads, building up to reading and representing numbers from 0 to 99 with tens and units.

Step 2 · Add and subtract
Once numbers feel familiar, children learn to add and subtract by moving available beads, progressing from a single move to sequences on the tens and units rods.

Step 3 · Cross the five
Children discover the pairs that make 5 and use the upper bead when a direct move is no longer enough, first with units and then with tens.

Step 4 · Carry and borrow
Pairs that make 10 introduce carrying and borrowing between rods. Children then combine friends of 5 and 10 while keeping every result below 100.
Hands-on paper activities with a real soroban and a pencil. Start with book one and work through the series at your child’s pace.
Choose a sheet after practising addition and subtraction. Print it, solve each column using an abacus or mental calculation, then review the answers with an adult.
